Blackmagic Cinema Camera

This new camera has been a hot topic at this years NAB show, and its’s definitely something to be excited about. I’ve been contemplating upgrading to the new Canon 5D MKIII since it’s launch, but I thought I’d wait to see what was coming out of NAB, especially on the video side of things. This is the first product in terms of value, quality, and functionality that seems to suit my production needs. It’s hard not to hit the “Add to Cart” button on their site.

The things I love about the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera are the lovely RAW 2.5K CinemaDNG, the uber fast SSD removable storage, and standard connections for audio – oh, and the price.

This camera feels like a comfortable jump from my usual DSLR video capture and workflow process into a more cinematic and flexible process. It also doesn’t feel as far of a leap into the price point of the Canon C300 or Sony FS700. A large part of my time is spent in post, correcting colours and grading - and now with their claimed 13 stops of dynamic range it would be a world of difference to what information is available to pull out. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera also comes with DaVinci Resolve colour correction software which makes it even more appealing.

This camera really fills a gap between DSLR shooters and the pros. While DSLRs look good most of the time, I think those looking to push the value and depth of their videos at a reasonable and attractive price point, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera will be difficult to avoid. Head over to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera site and get a closer look.

Work Hard. Play Hard. Downloadable iPhone Wallpaper.

I’ve been working on more of the Typography stuff as of late. This was a submission that was meant to be for a large wall graphic, but out of the many that I made, this one unfortunately didn’t make the cut. Rather than tossing it away I’m hoping you’ll make good use of it, and I’m hoping that it’ll remind you to keep inspired, work hard, and don’t forget to make time for the fun stuff. Just right click on the main bottom image and click “Save Image As”.

New Work – Up in the Air

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had many questions regarding the process and details of my submission for Studio Coalition’s “White Noise” Exhibit. Many people at the exhibit, as well as through emails and Facebook, have asked me questions regarding the photography and elements used in the image. In response to this, I’ll be compiling a thorough outline of the process, some of which is loosely documented on My Facebook Page. This will include the original sketches, photos that I took, the 3D process, cross referencing for lighting, and lastly – the photoshop refining and adding of effects. Keep an eye out after the holidays!

Man vs. Mouse – A Typography Show

On October 27th, The Gallery is hosting an exhibit of Typography featuring seven designers to compare and contrast hand illustrated work and digital work. I feel privileged to be in a show with some incredible talent. I’ve admired much of their work. Guys like Josh Ruck have been killing it for years, and it’s good to see guys like Ian MacFarlane (a fellow ACAD graduate – who seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth) resurface for this show. I’m especially interested in what the hand illustrators have in store. Since I’ve recently felt the impact that solid typography and good concept can have, with my Daft Life Series, I’m sure a show like this in Calgary will turn some heads. Artist line up includes; Cody Swinkels, Davey Gravy, Ian Macfarlane, Jason Deary, Josh Ruck, Tiffany Wollman, and myself.

Full Circle Podcast – Episode 24

Full Circle Podcast Episode 24 by Joey Camacho

It’s been a couple weeks since my last Podcast, and I’m excited to announce that the Full Circle Podcast will be getting slightly reworked in the upcoming weeks. This is a new mix with some tracks that I’ve been playing at my monthly residence at UBU Lounge located in the Grande Theatre. Highly recommended if you like an immersive experience that ranges froms laidback and top notch dining to bottle service and dancing on tables. As the night evolves so does the music and it’s a great fit for the escalating style of “deep, tough, and moving” house music that I enjoy.

Studio Coalition INHALE: Toronto Exhibition 2011

On September 8. 2011, we hosted our first exhibition of the work we captured in the Dominican Republic last year. Myself, Derek Heisler, and Calvin Locke all managed to regroup over 2000kms away from Calgary during TIFF to showcase the work we had compiled. Our wonderful hosts Heather Robertson and Rachelle Wilde were a perfect fit. It was a great opportunitiy to catch up with all the people we had met last year. It was also an amazing night where we were able to connect with some of Toronto’s most talented creatives and industry elite. It was all a bit overwhelming, but exciting nonetheless.

Focus and Experiment

Lately I find myself focusing harder on the work I love, rather than the work I have to do, and it’s beginning to pay off. It seems like a slow burn at first, overcoming some of the obvious obstacles, but acting without hesitation is very powerful. These experiment posts are a small tribute to me learning from others, experimenting, and continuing to pair passion and persistence to my work.

RISE:45 Sundays on West’s Rooftop Patio Launches July 3

West Restaurant and Bar has unleashed a bit of a monster in the form of it’s epic rooftop patio in the heart of Calgary’s downtown core. The weather is finally starting to come around it’s been packed there every evening with music filling the air and people getting to enjoy the nightclub feel outside in the warm air. It’s really quite an experience.

I was asked to help with the direction of the Sunday daytime party both visually and musically. So far, it’s been great. The team at West have been receptive and supportive, and have even met me on the patio at 5:30am to capture the sunrise on the patio. Which leads me to the origins of the concept.

RISE:45 came from the idea of battling the struggles of actually getting up on a Sunday, as well as celebrating the achievement of making it onto the +45 Rooftop Patio. RISE:45 is a combination of time and space – with crazy antics and rewarding customer interaction happening at 45 minutes after the hour all day long. RISE:45 is the opportunity to capture the success of those who make the Sundays memorable. You can count on some pretty interesting things going on that people will be tweeting, sharing, tagging, and updating their pages with.

RISE:45 strips away the conformity of the corporate crowd and open it’s arms to those who are willing and able to enjoy a “Sunday FunDay” feel. Think mimosas, Caesers, bottles of ice cold vodka, and of course great music filling the air. Of course, bathing suits and board shorts are welcome, dancing is highly encouraged, and water-guns and beach balls will most likely might make an appearance.

RISE:45 launch weekends are July 3 and July 10! Don’t miss out and book a reso with West Restaurant and Bar now.
