Blackmagic Cinema Camera

This new camera has been a hot topic at this years NAB show, and its’s definitely something to be excited about. I’ve been contemplating upgrading to the new Canon 5D MKIII since it’s launch, but I thought I’d wait to see what was coming out of NAB, especially on the video side of things. This is the first product in terms of value, quality, and functionality that seems to suit my production needs. It’s hard not to hit the “Add to Cart” button on their site.

The things I love about the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera are the lovely RAW 2.5K CinemaDNG, the uber fast SSD removable storage, and standard connections for audio – oh, and the price.

This camera feels like a comfortable jump from my usual DSLR video capture and workflow process into a more cinematic and flexible process. It also doesn’t feel as far of a leap into the price point of the Canon C300 or Sony FS700. A large part of my time is spent in post, correcting colours and grading - and now with their claimed 13 stops of dynamic range it would be a world of difference to what information is available to pull out. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera also comes with DaVinci Resolve colour correction software which makes it even more appealing.

This camera really fills a gap between DSLR shooters and the pros. While DSLRs look good most of the time, I think those looking to push the value and depth of their videos at a reasonable and attractive price point, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera will be difficult to avoid. Infiniti M35h – The World’s Fastest Accelerating Full Hybrid

Shot | Edited | Graded by Joey Camacho
Sound Design by Jay Klos
This was a three day shoot shot outside of Los Angeles, California where I did a quick run and gun behind the scenes for Critical Mass and the “World’s Fastest Accelerating Hybrid” commercial. Needless to say the pace of the actual commercial shoot was fast and, more often than not, there wasn’t more than a few seconds to get the shots needed.
The premise behind this video was to showcase the M35h being prepped for its moment on stage. The same way an actor would be prepped before going on camera, or an underdog fighter in the locker room getting ready to head out to the ring. I also wanted to call out the technical details of the shoot – the location, the cameras, equipment, planning – since there was some pretty amazing gear, and a lot going on set.

All footage was shot with the following:
Canon 60D
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD
Cinevate Atlas FLT Slider
Manfrotto 501HDV Head
Manfrotto 546B Pro Video Tripod
Glidecam HD – 2000
Editing was done in Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and motion tracking was done using The Foundry’s Camera Tracker.
